Chessa weaved through crowds in the casino, her pace brisk but not so manic that she would draw attention. She gazed for any sign of the killer but saw no one acting suspicious.

Fifteen feet from the exit, a hand gripped her shoulder. She pulled free and whipped around.

Reverend Diggs took a step backward, his stunted arms raised to defend himself. “Chessa, darlin’, I didn’t mean to scare you, but, trust me, if I can see through this disguise, so can the authorities. Talk to me.”

How Chessa wanted to trust somebody—him—but she couldn’t. Not with Helena lying dead in the women’s bathroom. No one was staring at the two of them, but someone would soon. Diggs drew crowds. She said, “I’ve got to go.”

“Running isn’t the answer. Ask your stepfather for help. He’s sick with worry.”

“I can’t. He’ll want me to come home and stay put. I need to be free to find out the truth.”

“Listen to me.” Diggs clasped her wrists. His thumbs pressed into her so hard that pain shot up her forearms.

Chessa pulled free as a sickening notion came to her a second time. “You. The eight dwarves,” she blurted then licked her lips, sorry for her faux pas. Diggs wasn’t a dwarf, per se, but he was shorter than the average man. “You were dressed as Rumplestiltskin.”

“I’m not following.”

“The massacre. What if the killers made a mistake with the other dwarves? You could be in danger.”

Diggs brandished a dismissive hand. “I am protected by the Lord.”

“No! He doesn’t protect everybody. He didn’t protect my mother. He didn’t protect Zach.” She gulped in air. “A friend said your companion at the ball was dressed as a witch. Who was she? What was her name? How well did you know her?”

“There he is!” a large older woman cried and bustled toward Chessa and Diggs. “Yoo-hoo! Reverend.” A group of similarly aged women followed her.

Chessa broke free and tore toward the front of the casino.

Diggs caught up to her and looped a hand around her elbow. For a smaller man, he was fast. “Please, don’t do this. We’ll get you the best lawyer.”

“I’ve got a lawyer.”

“Who?”

Chessa wasn’t sure. She hadn’t asked Ferguson for the name.

“Reverend!” the eager fan yelled.

With the distraction, Chessa wrested free again. “I’m innocent. I’ll prove it.” She fled through the exit. Warm wind slapped her face as she burst into the open.

“Chessa!” a man called from a white Toyota Tundra idling near valet parking. “Chessa Paxton!”

Chessa’s gaze locked with Newman’s, and a shiver skated up her spine. Could she trust him? No, she was tired. Vulnerable. She reversed direction.

“Stop, Chessa!” Newman yelled.

Chessa plowed past Diggs’s adorers. Near the blackjack tables she glanced over her shoulder. Newman, blocked by Diggs’s fans, was hopping up and down. He reminded Chessa of a duck in a shooting gallery. He yelled stop again, but Chessa didn’t. Couldn’t. She sped toward the exit leading to the employee parking lot.

Without paying attention to who might be coming in, she raced through the door.
